A media migration (also referred to as "rapid migration") is often faster than a standard DICOM migration. Media migration is a good choice when the legacy PACS system does not have efficient Query/Retrieve services. Since some PACS were only designed to take data in and consideration was never given for the eventual replacement of the system, engineering into emptying a PACS was often never done. Media migration includes the direct access of data from the PACS file system (when utilizing spinning disk solutions), as well as direct access to removable media (tape, CD, DVD, MOD, etc).

With a Media migration there is still the ability to update the data with the accurate metadata held captive in the legacy PACS database. Acuo has performed this data cleansing in conjunction with updates from the RIS as well. Media migration will always require data cleansing to assure the file content is up to date with the PACS database. It may also require more robust hardware and additional integration time.
